George Appling
Chief Operating Officer
Brightstar Corporation
Prior to joining Brightstar, George was a principal and head of the Telecom Practice at Katzenbach Partners.
"Many other firms only allow you to portray part of yourself, but at Katzenbach everyone is their whole person. I can feel it. I really believed in the place, and I loved it."
As COO of Brightstar Corporation, George manages the operations of a company that has $4.3 billion in sales in 49 countries. As President of Global Solutions, he is also responsible for convincing mobile network operators, manufacturers, and retailers that Brightstar has best-in-class supply chain and lifecycle management solutions for them.
In a typical week, you have a better chance of spotting George on an airplane than on the ground. "I live in Houston and on Monday morning I wake up at 5:30 and fly to Miami and work there. Monday night I fly to Germany and land Tuesday morning and work there Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday morning I fly back to Washington D.C. and work there Thursday. Thursday night I fly back to Houston and work there on Friday. Note that Houston and Washington D.C. can be switched with anything-India, Brazil, Chile. Three weeks in a month I go to a foreign country for two days. If we had kids already, I couldn't do what I do."
George's work at Katzenbach Partners led directly to his current position. "I got this job because I was at Katzenbach. Brightstar was my client and I served them for more than a year." But it was hard for him to leave. "I was quite enamored with Katzenbach, so much so that I recruited two close acquaintances to the firm. All the people at Katzenbach are so eclectic that it's very easy to be your whole self. Many other firms only allow you to portray part of yourself, but at Katzenbach everyone is their whole person. I can feel it. I really believed in the place, and I loved it."
